I am smitten!
The first time I laid eyes on this sweet baby boy, I was filled with love and joy. Then tonight I got to hold him for just a few precious minutes and he stole my heart! This dear baby was born five weeks early to my lifelong friends – Robert & Nina Ward. He has spent the first week of his life in the NICU and is likely to be there a bit longer.
His name is Micah Mitchell and he was born on Tuesday August 12 weighing in at 5 lbs 14 oz and 18 inches long. He he has 10 tiny fingers and 10 tiny toes, his skin is pink and soft as silk, his hair is like fine gold, his lips are kissable and he smells intoxicating. He is precious and he is perfect and he has a bonus chromosome – often known as Down Syndrome (or Trisomy 21).
Most importantly Micah is a gift from God. He is special, unique, and lovable. He will face challenges just like every other child…they just may be different challenges. He will not worry much about the complications and stresses of life; he will simply experience, cherish and savor every moment. He will experience Gods unconditional love and acceptance in a way that many of us never will and he will freely bestow that same unconditional love to others. He will greatly impact everyone who comes in contact with him. What an amazing life he will have! He is God’s wonderful creation –
- a blessing, not a burden
- a joy, not a sorrow
- a reason to rejoice, not to mourn
- a masterpiece, not a mistake
Psalm 139: 13-16
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
As I stood in awe & amazement over his incubator the day of his birth, I was filled with such love, joy and excitement for all that this baby will bring into not only the Ward’s lives but to everyone who is blessed to be a part of their circle. Our family is looking forward with eager anticipation to being a part of this spectacular journey!
Baby Micah – welcome to the world! We love you.
I agree with what a blessing Micah is, and will continue to be to all of us. God doesn’t make mistakes, Micah is who God created him to be.
Beth-
You have such a wonderful way with words! I know that what you shared about precious baby Micah has to be a tremendous blessing to his family. You were a blessing to me (a fellow CMC) a few years back when I asked for your input on controlling the size of our family, and I want you to know that I gave birth to number five on July 1st! God bless you! 🙂
What a sweet baby boy!
I think of Micah 6:8 “…Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God”. Micah was a prophet who pointed the world toward God. I can see it happening already with this little guy.
This is exactly what Micah did for me today through this letter! Because of him, and these words spoken over him, my family has new hope and a new perspective on our own challenges we have, and will overcome!
The Wards are truly blessed to have this incredible baby in their lives, as you said he will teach everyone willing to learn about unconditional love.
Congratulations Nina and Robert!!!
When my children were younger, I had the opportunity to help children like Micah as young adults with a grooming class. It was a wonderful group to be with – they all cared so much for one another, and were very accepting and gracious toward me. I believe it is a special gift, as you do, to have someone with Downs as part of your life – you honestly learn more than you can imagine.
What a blessing this baby is to a world which chooses to judge on outward appearance, instead of what really matters- our hearts. His heart is going to be a great blessing to many! Stopping to smell the flowers and breathe the air, something that little Micah will take great pleasure in I am sure! A reminder to all that the material things are so miniscule compared to the greater things in life- Love, Life, Family and most importantly, GOD!
Beth,
You don’t know me but I was a CMC for many years and have heard so much about you and received all of your posts that Carol Powell forwarded that I just had to join your website when you first started. I have kept up with your girls, the birth of Daniel, and your prayer for an adoptive son. I have learned so much from just reading your posts and enjoying your family photos. I have shared your letter about finding the right man with my daughters and now I will share with them your thoughts and feelings about such a special baby. The way you put things/feelings/beliefs into words is such an awesome gift from God. And your willingness to share those words with others you do not even know…well, I can’t thank you enough.
Your friends and their new baby are so very blessed to have you and your family as part of their circle. And I am so very blessed to be a recipient of your Monday Motivations!!!
May God continue to bless you, your family, friends and precious Micah, a most special gift God can give us.
Sincerely,
Jody McBride
Well said, Beth!

I just had a baby with Downs two weeks ago. A dear friend sent me your link. Thank you for your gift of words…our little Zach IS precious!!!
Thank you for your heart warming words of love for your son. I know what it feels like as I have the blessing to share my life with many of the tiny maricals we call children with special needs. My life is richer everytime I get another moment with one of them. Every night before bed, I thank God for the wonderful gift. I’m sure you know how heart warming it is to have another see your son for the gift he is, instead of feeling sorry for you. May you share countless, warm, loving memories in the years to come! Thank you!
