In just a matter of days

Yesterday as I was finishing up a backyard luncheon with my team of volunteers for the JECHS Spring Fling, trying to get Kristen out the door to her weekly cleaning job, getting the diaper bag packed & pulling out food “to go” as we were getting ready to head out the door for Amy’s last home soccer game and a evening watching the schools performance of Aladdin. (which was fabulous!)…..

….the girls blurted out – “Hey Mom!  The adoption agency called and they sounded excited!” After a quick look at the clock to see if they would still be open, I found the phone number and eagerly called Life Choices.  My heart was beating fast and I found myself pacing excitedly throughout he kitchen when the adoption coordinator said with her great southern drawl…”Beth, I have some exciting news for y’all”! She then went on to say that a precious baby boy had been born on Tuesday April 29 and that they would like to present our family album to the birth mother.

So folks, by early this next week we should know if we are headed to Tennessee to adopt a baby brother! I can’t tell you the excitement and joy that is filling our home today.  This could be the moment we are waiting for!  We have complete peace that if this is the baby that God has for us – it will happen.

So………PRAY!  Pray for this birth mom who has made a very hard & heroic decision, pray for this sweet 8lb baby boy and pray for us.

There is the small little obstacle that we will have to write a check for $7,000 to the agency (plus additional post placement fees we will need – but for now we have to have $7,000).  We currently have $710 in our adoption fund. So in a matter of days I may find out that we have to raise over $6,000 in a very short amount of time.  We have applied for grants (but will not hear for 60-90 days – which we obviously can’t wait until then). We have a yard sale/bake sale scheduled for a week from Saturday (if you have items to donate or would like to bake some things for us – AWESOME!).  After we get a confirmation, we are going to see if our pastor would be willing to take an offering for us at church. And on our baby brother blog we have been working on a donor plan involving recruiting 300 “adoption partners” to help us cover the remaining expenses.  Here is the plan – perhaps you or someone you know would like to be one of our baby brother adoption partners.

We are asking the Lord to give us 300 donors to help us raise the remaining monies needed for our adoption. We are calling this our adoption partners – We are in need of 100 to give $15, 100 to give $25 and 100 to give $50.  This page will keep you updated on our progress!  You can donate Online here!(Paypal or credit card)

12 donors to date – 288 to go

100 to give $15 (or even $10)

  1. Dionne Merriott of Lubbuck, Texas
  2. Terri Goode of Lakewood, Colorado

100 to give $25 or more

  1. Martha Burtenshaw of Centerville, Ohio
  2. Deanne Barth of Lodi, CA
  3. Charlotte Frye of Stockton, CA

100 to give $50 or more

  1. Dan & Krista Coyan, missionaries to Czechoslovakia
  2. Robin Dayneko of Ontario, CA
  3. Lisa Klaassen of Arkansas, Kansas
  4. Alan & Sue Ellen Hale of Grandview, Texas
  5. Anita Boling
  6. Gloria Grupe of Stockton, CA
  7. Becky Wegner of Memphis, Tennessee

We are also checking with the agency to see if someone wanted to contribute a significant amount towards our adoption (say $500 or $1,000 or more) if they could give them a tax receipt. Please pass this on to anyone you know who may have a heart for adoption and would like to play a part in this miracle.

You better believe that I will be posting the moment we hear word next week if this is our baby boy!

Fat Face Update – May 2

It is time for my monthly update and accountability on the diet and exercise plan progress.

  • Total weight loss – 40.5 pounds
  • BP (no meds) – 128/82
  • Exercise – Walking program consistent 6x a week/strength training – hit & miss (I need to really get consistent 3x a week with this – no excuses – it is just a pain to read from a paper then do the exercise…back to the paper etc…  Ahhhh to just go to Curves or how about a personal trainer! Ok…I’ll stop whining and start doing!)

I am pleased with the progress. When I drop four more pounds I will reach my second weight loss goal and will be in the acceptable BMI (Body Mass Index) for my height – so close! I will also be having a blood test this month to check out my cholesterol and blood sugar levels.  I hope to report to you next month that after over four months of healthy eating and exercise my lab report is excellent!  Then I will be ready to begin probably the hardest part of the journey – the last fifteen pounds – to reach my goal weight. (Well, I say the hardest, but I am sure maintenance is really the most challenging, requiring life long personal discipline)

I must share that I did learn something about my eating patterns this month.  I have had a pretty intense month – planning and carrying out a large scale fundraiser for the school (I will write about that later – looks like we raised over $25,000!). I was under an incredible amount of pressure and was putting in 10-12 hour days for several weeks. Here is what I discovered.  At the beginning of each of those long days, I found myself wanting to start the day with a Venti Vanilla Latte and a warm chocolate croissant.  After hours of working and feeling the enormity of this event weighing on my shoulders I wanted to reach for a cookie, leftover piece of birthday cake (Yes, Daniel turned one this past month & I do have photos to share!) or munch on a bowl of M & M’s as I typed on the computer.

I am happy to report that I resisted all these urges and did not give in to eating sweets or drinking my beloved coffee.  However, I was constantly aware of the fact this month that I have often used food as either a way to reward myself for hard work or as a motivation to “get up & get going”.  It was an eye opener for me to realize this.  I am sure when I get to the lifetime maintenance phase this realization will help me to not fall back into these bad habits.

Of course I did thoroughly enjoy my days off this month – date night (yummy pasta & bread at Macaroni Grill as well as popcorn at the movies) and Daniels first birthday (homemade from scratch mouth watering chocolate cake with mint chocolate icing, dinner of beef fajitas, chips & cowboy dip…AWESOME!)

My dear darling hubby has reached his goal weight (lost over 35 pounds!) and even wore his high school football jersey to school yesterday (It was “wear purple” day). He has his blood cholesterol test tomorrow! We are praying for excellent results!

Spring has sprung

Just in from my morning walk and….Spring has Sprung!

Everything is fresh, clean & new – the warm sunny days and perfect cool evenings, the kids riding bikes at the park, the smell of BBQ’s firing up in neighbors backyards, shorts & cooler clothes coming down from the attic, flowers blooming & grass growing longer and greener. Yes, Spring is here…and I love it!

There is something refreshing about the change of season.  Just when we are getting tired of the rain (or snow!), the cold winter nights, or foggy mornings…. God in His incredible creativity brings us a new season to enjoy. It gives us energy & enthusiasm and a fresh new start and perspective on life.

Perhaps this morning you need “spring” to arrive in your home based business. Perhaps its been a long cold winter & you haven’t seen much “sun” in your business lately. Perhaps you need to see new, fresh green growth in your business, or you are ready for a major change, or you need to add some fun & play.

Why not officially declare today the start of Spring in your business and start a little –

  • Spring Cleaning

There’s nothing like a stack of paperwork, unfinished business, discontinued products or inactive customers to really bog down your business! Its time to clean up…..if you haven’t used it…throw it out! If you need to finish up a project – get going! If you have a bunch of customers who never respond – give them one last call and tell them your doing some “Spring cleaning” and you’d like to know if they are still interested in staying on your active mailing list. (If they say no….by all means remove them…..you WILL be relieved!). Have a Spring cleaning “sale” or “special” and get rid of that discontinued or overstocked products you have. (its a great way to get events on your calendar too by offering EXTRA free gifts that have just been collecting dust anyway!) What a great feeling to start fresh & clean! (While your “physically” cleaning up be sure to start with a clean heart attitude too. Throw out your past failures, excuses or disappointments with your business and start a new today!)

  • Gardening

The best thing for any of our businesses is to see a bit of green growth happening. It lifts the spirit and soothes the soul to see the growth of spring & the beautiful array of flowers that begin to sprout up everywhere. It brings joy & life to everything! The same is true as business owners – we need to cultivate NEW growth in our businesses. If you haven’t held an event in awhile, perhaps you need to get revitalized and renewed in your vision for your busness. Or perhaps its time to begin planting seeds to get a fresh new brand of clients at your workshops, or a new excited hostess, or the greatest of new growth, an excited, hopeful, energetic, full of dreams & vision new recruit. Or maybe its time to start that Aspiring leaders group you’ve been thinking about. (I guarantee that if only one new leader pops up into your garden…it WILL revitalize your business!)

  • Play a little

Have some fun! Don’t be so serious – do something spontaneous! Get out from behind the computer and enjoy the sunshine. Have lunch with your consultant friends just for the fun & fellowship. Start a “dream” album, faithbook or celebration album all about you! Do something new in your business that you would enjoy – have a customer Spring tea, or meet at a park (let the kids play) and take time to enjoy looking at your customer albums (and letting them look at yours), or hold a fun theme workshop for your closest friends where you crop along with them & renew your love of scrapbooking. Remember to enjoy life each day and everything it brings.

Here’s to a new fresh spring start in your business….have an incredibly beautiful & blessed day!

We are approved!

I posted this morning on the baby brother blog and decided to post it here as well. Lord willing, perhaps soon we will have a baby brother.

We did it!

As of April 10, 2008, we have a completed home study and are officially approved to be able to adopt a child!  I feel as excited as I would if I finally passed an entrance exam, got a much anticipated acceptance letter or was looking at a positive pregnancy test!  It is a stellar day.

After five months of countless hours of writing, reading, training, interviewing, compiling and copying every important document I own – we have a nine page report that concludes with this recommendation:

Dan and Beth present a close, loving and stable relationship. They are devoted to one another and their children.  They are experienced parents and excellent role models with supportive extended family members and friends. They have strong moral and ethical characters.  Dan and Beth are emotionally mature and financially stable. They are able to provide optimal opportunity for growth and genuine love for an additional child. Family Connection Christian Adoptions highly recommend Dan and Beth Lambdin for adoption.”

Within minutes of getting this official report I got online and began applying for adoption grants….yes more paperwork. <sigh>  🙂

The first grant application should be in the mail by Monday. (and will take 90-120 days to process)  I will be researching other grants as well.

Here is our current financial situation:

The final adoption through the agency in Tennessee will cost:  $7,500 (as long as there are no unforseen legal expenses)

The airfare to Tennessee to pick up the baby will cost aproximatly: $800 – $1000 (for 2 round trip air fares)

The “post placement” visits will cost a total of: $1,200

That is a grand total of $9,500+ left for us to raise before we get “the call” that there is a baby waiting for us.  We are leaving it in God’s hands.  We have already spent over $5,500 on adoption and home study expenses to date.

$9,500 –  hmmmmmm – to us it might as well be nine million.  But to God it is NOTHING!

We curently have $125 in our adoption savings account and although it feels like starting over – but we are ready to get going on this next amount.

We will be having a yard sale on Saturday, May 10 – for anyone locally who has sellable items they would like to donate.  That is currently our only “plan”.

The girls and I were brainstorming the other day and “running some numbers” to see how many donations it would take to get to this amount:

Easy Math – 9,500 people each giving $1 (of course we do not know 9,500 people) or how about 950 people donating $10 each?

How about this math?

100 donations of $15 each = $1,500

100 donations of $25 each = $2,500

100 donations of $50 each = $5,000

Maybe we do know 300 people who would help us out! (Thanks to the several dozens of you who already have helped us by donating or by purchasing a wreath at Christmas) If you want to be a part of helping us adopt a child you can donate Online here! (Paypal or credit card) Or you can mail a check to:

313 W Robinhood Dr

Stockton, CA 95207

We appreciate all of you who have become a part of this adoption journey with us. If anyone out there has any great ideas on how to raise this money – please let us know!

Spring Fling – Picnic in the Park

Here is the flyer for the major fundraiser I am currently working non stop on.  Looks like fun doesn’t it?

We are having a silent and live auction and are looking for any items that we may be able to auction off.  I thought I would throw it out there to all my blog readers – you just never know who might want to donate or who may have a connection that could get us a unique or valuable donation. The school is well worth investing in! (if you want to read many wonderful stories about our students, staff and alumni – check out the Elliot blog www.jechs.wordpress.com.)

Jim Elliot Christian High School is a 501(c) (3) non profit organization. Contributions are tax deductible.

PS – If you are local and would like to attend – let me know – I have tickets!

It’s the deadline

I have a BIG deadline looming ahead of me that is forcing me to turn all my attention, effort and energy in that direction. In less than three weeks I am in charge of a Spring Dinner Auction for Jim Elliot Christian High School, that is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

I am promoting, planning, preparing, soliciting donations, selling tickets and recruiting, training and leading over 50 volunteers!

Deadlines are amazing motivators, don’t you think?  So for today’s Monday Motivation, I am reviving something I wrote five years ago about setting your own personal deadlines.  Here it is:

“I work better under pressure”

Haven’t we all heard (as well as used) those words often in our lives?  The truth is we don’t necessarily work better under pressure BUT we certainly do WORK!  It seems like all we need to accomplish something in life is…..a deadline.

Think about it –

  • How many of you will finally start getting around to doing our taxes this next week?  It’s that April 15th deadline!
  • Why can’t we lose that extra weight until the invitation to the class reunion arrives in the mail?  It’s because we finally have a deadline!
  • When do our kids sit down & really study for that test or write their term paper?  The night before its due – the deadline!

We all have a tendency to work hard & accomplish the goal when under the pressure of a deadline.  Just this morning, I told my girls that if they got dressed, ate breakfast & finished all their chores before I got home from my doctor’s appointment that I would take them to the store to buy their summer sandals.  It was amazing!  What usually takes them over an hour with lots of prodding from Mom was accomplished in half the time & they were ready & waiting to receive their reward.  They had a deadline!

In business, I think we often fail to work hard & accomplish our goals because we lack a deadline.   But the bottom line is we are self employed.  No one will fire us or fail us if we don’t meet these deadlines.  We must have internal motivation, drive & desire to put a self imposed deadline on our  goals & dreams and then work hard to meet that deadline.

  • Deadlines provide us with a sense of urgency.  We feel that “pressure” to get things done….and get them done NOW!!  As a matter a fact I am feeling that same sense of urgency that a deadline provides right now -with less than three hours left of Monday. (can you believe I actually began writing the first lines early this morning?)
  • Deadlines give us extra energy.  Have you ever noticed that you can stay up most of the night and not even feel tired, before a big event and accomplish all sorts of wonderful things, simply because it has to be done by tomorrow.  The adrenaline of the deadline helps us to accomplish the seemingly impossible
  • Deadlines forces us to lay aside our excuses. When faced with a deadline we stop making excuses as to why we haven’t done something yet and we start looking for ways to do it.
  • Deadlines help us to focus. We are able to really concentrate on that one goal and not let anything distract us from meeting it.  We have the single-mindedness, determination and power that focus brings.

Begin today to set yourself a self imposed deadline to meet your business goals.

Set a deadline to schedule ___X___ number of events in the next month by this Friday. Call your upline or manager and tell them your goal.

Set a deadline to make five phone calls before you get to enjoy your morning coffee!

Set yourself a deadline to have your current family pictures in your album & journaled by National Scrapbook Day (what a great example you’ll be to your clients!) Email them & tell them that you’ll have it there to show them along with great ideas to complete simple & easy albums.

Set a deadline to promote to leadership in your company by ______________,2008.  Tell your spouse, your family, your friends, your upline and sidelines.

Did you notice all these “self imposed” deadlines also included telling others?? The more people you tell the more it will feel like a “real” deadline. (and the more pressure you’ll put on yourself to meet the deadline!)

I had a self imposed deadline today, that when Joy was 6 weeks old, I would do two things – start back up writing Monday Motivations and go back to the fitness center!  I put it on my calendar and planned and prepared to do it, but I also told others.  For Monday Motivations I emailed & told everyone I’d be back  (no pressure there…..Ive already received several emails today asking if I had sent it yet!) and as for working out I shared my deadline with my friends, the owners of the center and my family.

And as I sit here in the quietness of the late evening, with my muscles aching from my first workout in nine months, typing one handed as I nurse the dear baby, I have that sweet satisfaction that comes when you have accomplished your goal & met the deadline!

Here is that “dear baby” I was nursing when I wrote that Monday Motivatin. Joy just turned five in February!

I hope to be able to keep posting during the next three weeks before the BIG event (as it is a very enjoyable “break” for me) but if you begin to hear from me less, you’ll know why! It’s the deadline! 🙂

On my way to church….

To my dear friend Teri, mother of five boys (and any of you Mommys out there with an all boy household):

I was thinking about you this morning as I tried once again to get out the door….on time….for church. I thought of the many things you will not experience as a mother of all males. You will never –

  • Have to get out of the shower dripping wet to hunt down your razor that the girls “just had to” use during their Saturday night “shaving party” ritual. (and give the lecture for the “umteenth” time about not using my razor!)
  • Get back in the shower to find out that the shaving cream is completly empty – scream at the top of your lungs – to no avail – for someone to bring me the shaving cream from the other bathroom. (only to strip my vocal chords, finally give up & just steal Dan’s shaving cream from the medicine cabinet…thanks honey!)
  • Listen to the constant battle for the mirror, curling irons and hair accessories.
  • Watch your five year old try on four different dresses with a complete meltdown in between each one, before deciding on the “perfect” one. (that I had suggested in the first place!)
  • Once again, go and  retreive my mousse from the girls bathroom….grrrrrr!
  • Exclaim – “No! We do not have time for you to paint your nails” as I catch a wift of nail polish drifting down the hallway
  • Throw every pair of shoes out of the closet only to conclude that one of your daughters has borrowed your dress shoes and has already left with Dad for Sunday School. (my shoes are the only thing of mine that come even remotly close to fitting them – but watch out girls – another 30 pounds and I just might be raiding your closet before church!)
  • Walk through the hall and almost pass out from the fumes of hair spray, mousse, perfume and nail polish!
  • Listen to the constant Sunday morning complaint – “I have nothing to wear!” (do boys EVER say that??) – I’m not sure what their closet & drawers are filled with – but apparently it is nothing!
  • To finally get in the car only to look in the rear view mirror and realize that your youngest has not brushed her hair and looks like an orphan child. (and of course we do not have a brush in the car.) Oh well! We are already late…it will have to do. (and yes I am sure her children’s church teacher thinks my husband is a widower by the way she looks on many a Sunday morning)

Ah, the joy of daughters. Yes, I know that these days will pass all too soon (and I do live with this reality as the eldest daughter is already gone) and I will be wishing for the days of missing razors, hair products and shoes, dress meltdowns and messy hair and a bathroom that looks like a cyclone hit a hair salon.  But can I look forward to 10 years down the road when the majority of my household is male (Daddy, Daniel, and perhaps a couple more adopted boys, Lord willing) – that I just might be on time for church?

Tell me it is a possibility!

The “low maintenance” men in my life before church

Welcoming a child

This weekend we sat down with our family and made the decision to sponsor a child monthly through World Vision.  We reviewed the packet they sent us giving us details of the child we will sponsor and watched the DVD highlighting children from different countries who have been helped through World Vision.  It is alwaya amazing to me to see the way people live in other countries.  The things we take for granted in the United States are vast! (like having clean running water at our disposal every minute, indoor plumbing, floors that are not made of dirt, multiple bedrooms – or even beds for that matter!)

Here is the darling little seven year old boy, Nthabana, from Southern Africa that we are sponsoring:

This is a family project – not just a “Mom & Dad” thing, so we discussed how we were going to all participate.  Here is our plan:

  1. Prayer – We will all pray for him and his family.  We will add his photo to our prayer album that we use during homeschooling to remind us to pray.  We wil pray for him during family dinner time as well as individually.
  2. Finances – It costs $35 a month to sonpsor a chld through World Vision.  We are all going to chip in!  Joy is going to contribute her change each month. Grace is going to weed the yard for an hour a month. Rebekah, Kristen, Amy & Michelle are going to each chip in each month from their personal savings.
  3. Correspondance – Once a month we will sit down and write him letters, assemble a care package and have the younger ones draw pictures.  What a great family night activity!

Jesus said “…whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name, welcomes me.”  Matthew 18:5

This is a perfect and easy way to welcome a child, in Jesus name.

dieting dialogue

Some random thoughts on the dieting deal.

Questions people ask me  “How do you do it?” or “Do you ever just want to quit?” or “Don’t you crave (really desire) ___________?”

How do I do it?  Just the way you do anything.  You stop “trying” and start doing!  You just get up each day and make a choice as to how you are going to live.  Is it always easy? No!  Is it a constant battle? Yes! Is it much fun? Not really. Is it hard? Of course.  So what?  Many important things in life are just the same (parenting, serving others, living for the Lord) and yet we carry on and persevere with these things even though they are not always easy or fun and take hard work.

Do I ever want to quit?  Well of course…just about everyday when I drive by Starbucks, walk by the ice cream section of the grocery store, bake a birthday cake for my kiddos, make cookies for tea or when watching my girls chow down on buttered popcorn while we watch a movie as a family.  But I don’t quit….because where will that get me? Overweight and unhealthy

Do I crave (really desire) certain foods? You bet I do! (see list above) However just because we really desire something does that mean we should just take it? (or in this case eat it)  I really desire my neighbors truck too but that doesn’t mean I walk next door and take it.  If I can control my desires (cravings) for others things – can’t I control my desire for certain food? Yes, we all can and do all the time.

Someone recently said to me when commenting on my new shape – “Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels”

Hmmmmmmmmmmm….I will have to disagree with this statement.  I can think of lots of things that taste as good if not better than being thin feels (although I am not yet thin) –

  • fresh corn on the cob slathered with butter & seasoned wih salt & pepper
  • fettucini alfredo with shrimp
  • home baked bread dipped in olive oil & balsamic vinegar
  • sweet potato ravioli’s (made by gourmet chef and friend Scott Fichtner – in fact just about anything Scott cooks tastes better than thin feels!)
  • dark chocolate covered pretzels
  • ice venti vanilla latte with whip cream
  • homemade cookes – snickerdoodles, peanut butter and chocolate chip
  • a brownie sundae
  • homemade yellow cake with dark chocolate icing and an ice cold glass of milk
  • a warm Starbucks chocolate croissant with hot coffee
  • cowboy dip with a bag of tortilla chips
  • homemade fajittas

Ok, that list is long enough. (and believe me I could make it even longer) My point is that – yes being in good shape and healthy feels great – but eating delicious yummy foods feels great too!  I think that one of the ways that I can stick with the diet is because I take off one full day a month as well as my date night dinner with dear darling Dan and enjoy anything I want..and enjoy it I do!  It feels fabulous!

When I finally get to the maintenance part (which by the way I think is much harder than the losing part. Of course in the past 18 years I have rarely had a chance to stay very long on a maintenance routine because I am quickly blessed with another baby!), I hope to be able to eat healthy (fat flush plan) Monday thru Friday and then take the weekends off and enjoy the foods I love! And if it works (ie: I can maintain my health & weight)…then that will feel better than both eating whatever I want and being thin!

My daily diet routine

You asked for it….you got it!

Many of you have wanted to know what I was doing to lose weight – so here are the details (complete with photos because I LOVE pictures!)

First things first though – there really is only one “secret” to losing weight – are you ready?  waiting with baited breath? can’t wait to finally know how to shed those unwanted pounds? Ok….here is the BIG secret………

Eat less…Exercise more!

Ok, so it is not such a big secret.  We already all knew that. (But wouldn’t it be great if there was some magic pill you could take that would keep you thin & fit??)

However I do believe that different diets and routines work better for some than for others and the real “secret” is finding the best “fit” for your personality and lifestyle.  I have done many diets in my life including:

  • Counting Calories (Weight Watcher type routine – I have just never needed weekly meetings because I was blessed to have positive parents and their words etched in my heart & mind motivate me continually)
  • Atkins (low carb, high fats)
  • Curves Diet (lower carb, average fats)
  • Fit for Life (food combining)
  • Somersizing (low carb & food combining)
  • The Coffee & Cookie Diet (LOL – don’t ask! I don’t recommend this)

All of these diets had aspects that were positive (well maybe not the coffee & cookie diet) and I learned things about my body, health & nutrition through them all.

However I have found the “diet” (lifestyle eating plan) that works the best for me (disclaimer here – it may not be the one for you) – The Fat Flush Plan by Ann Louise Gittleman.  Let me tell you why this is my personal “diet of choice”.

  1. I need fast results!  Ok so I am a teeny weeny bit goal oriented and I want to see results for my effort.  It keeps me on track & motivated.  The first two weeks of this plan you lose weight FAST! (and yes then you are back at the 1-2 lbs a week, if you are lucky, just like most every diet around)  I lost 15 pounds in the first two weeks this time (and pre baby Daniel when I was on it in 2006 I lost 12 pounds).  Since you are also losing lots of water weight you lose inches too.  The scale, the loose clothes and the extra energy all contribute to me sticking with it!  And once you do something for 2 weeks, it is much easier to “stay the course”.
  2. I need not just a diet but a specific eating plan to target my health “issues” (also known as PROBLEMS).  The Fat Flush eating plan specifically targets high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and blood sugars – all things I want to keep “in check”.
  3. I do better with a “list” of what I can and can’t eat.  I am simply NOT someone who can eat just one cookie or a sliver of cake!  I suppose it is a very good thing that I never drank alcohol or did drugs….because I would probably be addicted!  I just have one of those personalities. (However I do seem to be able to take a day off – enjoy all those “yummies” and then get right back on it the next day – that must be my incredible strong will)
  4. I excel at routines.  If you give me a plan, tell me exactly what to do – I can do it.  And I can do it over & over & over again.  I really do not get bored.  While there is a huge cookbook that goes along with this diet, I usually do the same meals daily – except for dinner – which varies between about four menus.

So that is why the Fat Flush plan works for me!

Why it might not work for others:

  1. It takes a lot of planning.  You can’t start this diet without going grocery shopping & to the health food store (or if you are blessed to live ny a Trader Joes)  I promise you that NOBODY has everything they need in their kitchen to begin this diet.
  2. It takes daily preparation.  You can’t do this diet “on the fly”  If you are like me and sometimes leave the house at 7am not to return until 7pm then you have to have all your foods prepared to go with you. A key to this diet is eating all three meals and both snacks as well as drinking the prescribed amount of liquid.  Not easy but I have found well worth it!
  3. It is a bit complicated.  Not that you need a PhD or anything like that – but there are lots of “rules” that you have to get down.  However once you have gone through the two week plan you are pretty much indoctrinated into the system. The positive side of it being complicated is that it takes much focus – and if you are going to be successful at anything you have to focus!  This forces you to focus.
  4. It can be more expensive (however I don’t think it is more expensive than the vanilla lattes 3x a week combined with occasional eating out and monthly prescription of blood pressure medication)

Now I am not trying to discourage anyone.  This may be the plan that works for you too!  I just want you to have realistic expectations.  Ok, finally what you have been waiting for – my daily diet routine.  I am not going to go into the details of “why” I eat and drink what I do.  If you need to know the “whys”, you’ll need to purchase the book.  Just know that everything has a purpose (weight loss, fighting water retention, digestion & metabolism aids, toxic cleansing & health benefits), it all fits together and works great!

Night before – mix 8 oz pure unsweetened cranberry juice & 56 oz of water – pour it into 16 oz bottles for easy access – refrigerate.

dscn5232.jpg

First thing upon waking up – you get to drink the “Long Life Cocktail” – 8 oz of cranwater & 1 teaspoon of pysillium…mix thoroughly (with wire whisk or in a shaker bottle) drink FAST!  It is DISGUSTING! (unless of course you are a cow & like to eat grass)  But I do it every day. 🙂

Next….squeeze 1/2 lemon into cup & add 8 oz of warm water…drink warm lemon water (I actually like this and I think all the extra vitamin C kept me from getting any nasty winter colds)

Wait at least 20 minutes then have breakfast. (I go on my 30 minute walk during this time)

Breakfast – You have to eat 2 of the Omega 3 eggs..you can have them poached, hard boiled, fried (but in chicken broth), scrambled or omelet.  You can saute veggies & put them in eggs (I use onions, bell peppers & mushrooms) You can add 1 T of flax oil to your veggies or eggs. (you need 2 T of Flax oil a day) Add spices.  I like garlic powder, cayenne & cinnamon on mine. (It sounds strange but it is yummy!)  I LOVE my daily omelet.

Since I am past the 2 week induction – I also get to add a piece of Ezekial 4:9 bread drizzleed with flax oil & sprinkled with cinnamon.

MMMM…good! My favorite meal of the day!

After breakfast I take four 500 mg evening primrose oil pills  with 8oz of cranwater (I also take a calcium supplement since I am still nursing)

Mid morning snack – 1 serving of fruit (from list at end)  I always have an apple, cut up & sprinkled with cinnamon.

20 minutes before lunch – drink 8oz cranwater (Notice you are not drinking with your meals – at least 20 minutes before ar right after)

Lunch – 4oz of protein & veggies of your choice from list.  I normally have a salad with chicken or turkey in it.  I use lettuce or spinach, celery, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, a carrot. I use one of the two dressings in the book…which I like both.  My salad is HUGE and yummy!

This doesn’t even feel like dieting to me!

Basic Dressing – 1/4 c. flax oil, 1/4 c. apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/2-1 clove garlic (I also add splenda because I like it sweet – this is CHEATING according to the book that only allows for Stevia – ok so I don’t follow it perfectly)

Lime Dressing – 4 tbsp flax oil, 4 tbsp fresh lime juice, 2 cloves garlic minced, 1/2 tsp cayenne, Chopped cilantro to taste
Combine all ingredients.  This is spicy!

After lunch – drink 8oz cranwater

Mid afternoon snack – fruit or fruit smoothie (6 large strawberries, 1 T flax oil, 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder, ice, bit of water, splenda if desired)

I love, love, love my fruit smoothie. It is yummy, refreshing and feels like a treat everyday!

Ready to enjoy my smoothie after a hectic day running around!

4pm or so – drink 16 oz cranwater

Dinner – 4- 6 oz protein & as many vegies as you want – I usually have salmon, chicken or lean beef and steamed veggies – broccoli, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, asparagus, green beans, artichokes etc…

My favorite dinner is grilled salmon with sauteed onions & bell peppers smothered all over the top and a huge side of green beans.  It is delicious! My second favorite is grilled chicken breast with an artichoke (I use my salad dressing to dip the leaves in) Yummy!

After Dinner – Take 4 more Evening Primrose pills with 8 oz cranwater

Before Bed – “Long Life Cocktail” (same as morning)   Ok so this is the single hardest thing for me to do before I go to bed.  I don’t know why I can “just do it” in the morning but I dread it at night.  I probably only actually drink this 50% of the time.

And if you want to “try it” – here is a shopping list as well as all the “approved” foods for you. This list gives amounts to purchase that will get you through the first two week induction:

Psyllium husk powder (Trader Joes or Health Food Store)
Evening Primrose capsules – you need 112 pills to last 14 days (Trader Joess, Health Food Store Costco)
Flaxseed Oil (TJs or Health Food Store)
4 bottles of Un-sweetened Cranberry juice (TJ’s or health food store)
7 – 9 fresh lemons
Omega 3 eggs – 3 dozen (TJ’s)
Vanilla Whey protein powder (if you are making smoothies)
Splenda (if you want to add a bit of sweetness to smoothie & dressing)

Spices on hand – (you probably have many already) – this is what I use primarily

Cinnamon
Garlic powder
Cayenne Pepper
Dry Mustard
Ginger
Cumin

other “approved” spices you can use
dill
fennel
cloves
bay leaves
parsley
cilantro
coriander
anise
DID YOU notice no SALT??  That will whipe out some of you – you can use seas salt but that is it!

Apple Cider Vinegar  (to make dressings)

Low sodium chicken or vegetable broth (To cook with since you can’t use oil…except olive oil spray on the bottom of a pan)

Protein (you can eat chicken, lean beef, seafood, lamb…NO pork)- these are approximates for 2 weeks –

10-12  boneless skinless chicken breasts
7 pieces of frozen Salmon
1 pk of 4 pieces of lean beef

Lots of vegies – pick from – cucumbers, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, broccoli, asparagus, green beans , carrots (only 1 a day allowed) , brussel sprouts, eggplant, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, cauliflower, cabbage, chives, olives (Only  6 a day allowed), radishes, tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts, parsley, okra, bean sprouts, watercress, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, garlic, jicama, radicchio, arugula, escarole, daikon, endive AND fresh lettuce – Romaine, green leaf or Spinach.  You need to buy these fresh.

FRUIT – Here are your daily choices — you have to eat 2 a day (mid morning or mid afternoon snack)  You will need to buy these every 4 or so days so they are fresh.

peach
apple
orange
6 large strawberries
1/2 grapefruit
2 medium plums
10 lg cherries
nectarine
1 cup of blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries (or a combo)

Ok you asked for it…and you got it! (more than you probably wanted to know!)  The one thing that would make this diet perfect is having a personal chef to hand me my meals on a tray with beautiful dishes, a color coordinated napkin and a flower in a vase! (one can always dream!)

Fat Face Update – April 2

I am right in the midst of another HUGE Jim Elliot Fundraiser but wanted to give you my monthly update after three months on my healthy eating, weight loss & exercise regimen.

As of today I have lost a total of 33 pounds – which means I am back down to what I weighed when I became pregnant with Daniel in the summer of 2006.  Yipeee – first goal met! I have also lost a total of 15 inches! The “fat clothes” have been put away and the “middle of the road” clothes are in the closet (yes that is right – I still have the “skinny clothes” to fit into…can anyone else relate?) The “fat face” is pretty much gone (although the double chin occasionally shows up) – here is a photo of me blogging today.

Next Weight goal: 15 more pounds (which will put me at my December 1996 after 4 children weight)

My blood pressure readings are headed downward with averages of 130/82 without medication! (yes, I check daily)

Next BP goal: 120/80 without medication

I have stayed committed to my exercise plan of walking 5-6 times a week for at least 30 minutes. (and at the beach it was 60 minutes plus everyday – love, love, love walking on the seashore!)

Beginning this month of April, I have decided it was time to begin some weight and resistance training.  What I would really like to do is renew my Curves membership because that is an easy, fun, “no brainer” way to get great weight training in.  (and I LOVE Curves having been a member there from 2000-2006) However, at this point in life we simply do not have the extra funds to commit to this monthly expense.  It would be easy to just whine and complain and use this as a great excuse to not get back to this type of all important exercise….BUT I have learned (the hard way) that “whining and complaining” or “wishing and waiting” get you nowhere! As I was trying to figure out how to get this type of  all important muscle building activity into my life at no expense, I found a magazine in the nursing mothers room at my church that outlined a 30 minute weight & resistance training routine that you can do with little to no equipment (except soup cans).  Isn’t God good?  I brought that magazine home and began this weight training this week!

Next Exercise goal: Continue walking program 5-6 times a week; 30 minutes of weight & resistance training 3-4 times a week.

Until next month!

PS – My dear darling husband has lost 27 pounds since he began on February 4th.  Go Dan!  His blood test is scheduled for May – can’t wait to see his results.  We both enjoyed our day off on Easter Sunday immensely (and look forward to taking Daniels 1st birthday off this month!). 🙂

Easter Family Photos

I’ve always loved getting us all dressed up on Easter Sunday in color coordinating and/or matching dresses for the girls.  Besides making for beautiful photos, it also creates wonderful memories and gives us a unique sense of family togetherness and unity.  The girls can tell you many a funny story about their Easter, Christmas & 4th of July clothes! (or just color coordinating for an excursion to make it easier to spot all the kids!) This year I actually picked out the teenage daughters skirts and to their amazement I had “good taste”!  🙂

We also have always taken this dress up opportunity to take family pictures while we are all looking good!  Our dear life long friend Michelle Sallee has taken many of those photos.  She is quite an excellent photographer and has recently started up a photography business.  If you like what you see here – check out her blog at Sallee Photography to look at her awesome photos – weddings, sports action photos, senior portraits, family photos, beach pictures & more.  If you live locally and would like to hire a fabulous budding photographer – I highly recommend her!

What do you think of my beautiful family? The only thing that would have made these photos better is having my eldest daughter Michelle home to be in them!

Happy Easter

When we wake up on Easter morning all the black ribbons are gone from the table and mantle and they are blaze with color and new life, looking like this –

After sunrise service we unveil the Easter basket (yes we only have one family basket – another joy of having a large family!) and everyone enjoys having a hard boiled egg along with coffee cake & doughnuts for breakfast. (and I’m sure everyone snags at least one piece of candy from that basket too!)

We head off for Easter service at our home church after taking family photos. (to be posted soon)  We have been attending the same church for almost 25 years and we are so blessed to have life long friends who we get to celebrate together with.

After church, we have our traditional Easter Brunch. We were blessed with beautiful sunny 79 degree weather today so we were able to have it outside! (which we love).  We always serve – Egg Casserole, Hash Browns topped with cheese & sour cream, sausage, asparagus (a home grown specialty in Stockton!), cinnamon rolls, chocolate covered strawberries, sparkling cider and coffee.  It is spectacular!  After our brunch we had the children share the Resurrection Eggs (12 plastic Easter Eggs each filled with something representing the story of the Passion of Christ from His entrance into Jerusalem to His resurrection). This year we were joined by our dear sister Jennae, closest friend Michelle and good family friends Jen Gibson and her three daughters – Cassidy, Audrey and Chloe.  We all enjoyed a lovely afternoon together.

I pray your Easter celebration was glorious!

Christ is Risen!

He is Risen Indeed!

In the very early morning hours while it was still dark my mother would awaken us up from our slumber exclaiming in a hushed tone – “Christ is Risen!” – and of course we were expected to respond – “He is Risen Indeed!” (which we always did although sometimes quite unenthusiastically when we became “tired” teens) We would then get up & get dressed and head out into the darkness to drive to a sunrise service.  These services were always filled with an amazing sense of awe and majesty as the power of our risen Lord seemed to fill the air and we breathed in His presence.  As the sun rose above the horizon and we sang songs of the risen Savior, it all came alive to me in a new and fresh way.  It is these moving experiences of Easter Sunrise Services, late night church services on a candlelit Christmas Eve, Christian Summer Camp Meetings, sitting alone in a beautiful chapel or sanctuary talking to God,  powerful worship and special communion times that have all been a part of what caused me to fall in love with the Lord and develop an intimate relationship with Him.

And as an adult,  sunrise services still bring me to tears as I sit in the dark of the early morning and watch the sun arise and join together with fellow believers to celebrate the resurrection. I hope that my children will catch this same heart of fire for the Lord as we cultivate these traditions.  In our early family years when we had many little ones, we held a simple sunrise service in our very own backyard.  Nine years ago the pastors of our city came together and began a city wide sunrise service in our community downtown on the waterfront.  We have attended every year since its inception.  And it is AWESOME! (If you are reading this blog and live in the Stockon area – you should make every effort to BE THERE!)

It is awesome to:

  • be up at that early hour and sense the same reality of those who came the tomb on the morning of the resurrection. (Think of the song that begins – “Was it a morning like this?”)
  • watch the sun rise and take in the breathtaking beauty & majesty of Gods creation.
  • worship with fellow believers in the risen Lord from all denominations! (“How good & pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”)
  • listen to the story of Jesus and His triumphant Resurrection! (the story never gets old!)
  • remember & celebrate the day that you first became aware that Christ died for YOU and that He conquered death, hell & the grave so you could have eternal life. It is truly an amazing indescribable love!

Here is our family this morning at the Stockton Sunrise Service –

The message was especially inspirational and we were moved to adjust our morning plans and pick up some boxes of coffee at Starbucks and pass it out while we were downtown and tell them – “Christ is Risen!”
